PROJECT „ABANDONED ANIMALS IN BOGATIC“

During 2016. ORCA has implemented the project on the territory of Bogatic municipality aimed to provide support to development of the humane and effective mechanism of dog population control which is in line with Article 54. of Serbian Animal Welfare Act and the international standards of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). Project was co-funded by municipality of Bogatic and ORCA.

In order to create a dog population control system in the municipality of Bogatic, ORCA conducted research of the current state, capacities and needs of the municipality in area of dog population control. This included owned and stray dog population surveys, research of the behaviour and habits of dog owners, dog welfare assessment, dog owners’ attitudes survey, assessment of environmental factors that affect stray dog survival (carrying capacity of the environment) and assessment of the capacities and attitudes of main stakeholders in the local community that are important for dog population control.

Based on data on current state collected in the field through these research ORCA developed Dog Population Control Programme adapted to the specific characteristics of the local environment. Research ensured that the Programme is efficient, realistic and completely tailored to the needs of Bogatic municipality.
